This year we observe the resurrection of OUR RISEN SAVIOR on Sunday April 16th, 2017. Oddly and sadly enough, this celebration over the last 200 years in our western hemisphere has been muddied by a tradition named “Easter” which was a German / Saxon tradition. This celebration made its’ way into the US in the 1700’s through German immigrants which mostly settled in Pennsylvania. As a result, over the last 200 years the “Easter” bunny has become the most commercially recognized symbol associated with the “Easter” celebration, instead of OUR RISEN SAVIOR.
God’s word in Romans 12:2 reminds us. “Do not be conformed to the ways of this world but do be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. Following or performing worldly traditions is definitely not a way for us to be transformed, in doing so, we are just looking to merely fit in with society. Not to mention all the added financial tensions we bring up on ourselves spending unnecessary funds buying baskets, colored eggs, parties, etc.
There is nothing inherently evil about the bunny or the colored eggs, these are mere valueless objects. The question then becomes, Why then do we feel the need to celebrate OUR RISEN SAVIOR along with these valueless objects, when He is the most valuable being to live, and most importantly, to die on a bloody Cross, and resurrect Himself on the third day so that we can enjoy eternal life?
